Locks are the first line of defense for home and property; this means that all other methods of securing possessions and ensuring safety of the people within a home exist to augment the lock. Locks, therefore, should be a priority for all homeowners. Without a functioning lock, any of the other methods can be easily defeated. Neglecting to change the locks on a new home is the same as allowing the previous residents free access. If the previous residents shared their keys with other people, those people now have access to the home as well. Note that many people give keys out to family and friends just in case they get locked out of their home.
